ASME Presidents and Globalization

ASME Presidents and Globalization ASME Presidents and Globalization ASME Presidents and GlobalizationFor the first 90 or so years of its existence, ASME concerned itself chiefly with engineering in the United States. But as the Societys focus shifted outward in the last few decades of the twentieth century, ASMEs presidents played a pivotal role.Since the 1970s,ASME presidentshave increasingly traveled the globe to represent ASME as signatories to international agreements, to forge alliances and friendships among ASMEs international counterparts, and to serve as the face of an increasingly global society that understands engineering to be important not just in the U.S., but everywhere. As Richard Folsom (ASME President, 1972-73) said in anoral history interview Weve got to look at engineering on an international basis, to have an influence and gain experience.ASME made the formal decision to expand into the international arena at a now-legendary 1970 Goals Conference known as Arde n House.Donald E. Marlowe(ASME President, 1969-70) convened the historic conference to re-envision all of the Societys activity for a new era. It welches at Arden House that ASME declared that strengthening the ties among engineers worldwide would become one of the Societys official goals for the future. This declaration quickly confronted the governors with a consequential choice Should they change ASMEs name to reflect its international aims? Or should ASME remain an American Society as it opened to the world? Happily, said Donald N. Zwiep (ASME President, 1979-80), Society leaders decided to keep the ASME name, remain the American Society, and embrace a globalizing future by establishing partnerships with sister organizations around the globe. ASME decided, said Zwiep, to help the ME organizations in (other) countries rather than amalgamate them as part of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. In his own oral history, Allen Rhodes (ASME President, 1970-71) agreed with thi s approach Rhodes thought it better to work on the international scene as an American society too. Vickie Rockwell (ASME President, 2011-2012 ) at a UNESCO Signing ceremony in June 2012.Vickie Rockwell (ASME President, 2011-2012 ) at a UNESCO Signing ceremony in June 2012.In the years following Arden House, ASME set about building those agreements of cooperation with its sister societies around the world. To make it happen, ASME presidents were called into service as the Societys global ambassadors. Among them, Arthur Bergles (ASME President, 1990-91) welches among the most traveled. We celebrated the 20th year of international partnership-building said Bergles, by signing agreements of cooperation with engineering societies in France, Belgium, Italy, Norway, Yugoslavia, Argentina and Israel, bringing the total then to 28.Nathan Hurt (ASME President, 1991-92) spent much of his tenure traveling the globe on behalf of ASME as well. Hurt described leading international m issions to formal summits with engineering societies in Australia, Colombia, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Israel and Singapore.By that time, ASMEs presidents had come to expect extensive global travel for much of their terms an enriching and surprisingly demanding new requirement of the job.Beyond their ambassadorial work, manyASME leadersof recent decades also came to believe Society members must be ready for an increasingly international engineering marketplace. In his presidential term in 2003-04, Reggie Vachon advocated for a Mobility of Engineering Credentials working group for this reason. With globalization, said Vachon, engineers are going to have to prepare themselves to be able to practice across geopolitical boundaries. He believes strongly that were in a world where people have to interact, and the practice of engineering is across borders.ASMEs leaders had also come to binnensee engineering itself as an international activity. The earths atmosphere, the ozone la yers which are disappearing, this is an international problem, said Folsom in his oral history interview.ASME had evolved to see its responsibility as including but by no means limited to the scope of U.S. engineering. ToTerry Shoup(ASME President, 2006-07), the continuing need for international focus was clear The fastest-growing segment of our membership population is from outside the United States. Our codes and standards are now in places where they werent before. Our technical conferences are more global than theyve ever been before, said Shoup in his oral history interview. Shoup was pleased that ASME has pushed globalization as an important priority for what we are doing and how were doing it.View a video clip from ASMEs Oral History with Terry E. Shoup. Thus a tradition begun in 1970 is still going strong today. When ASME first made the decision to reach out to the wider world, its presidents led the way as global ambassadors, policy advocates, and spokespeople for the engine ering profession. Theyre still doing so today.Read more about ASME Presidents and Globalization The copyright of this program is owned by ASME.

Sheryl Sandberg We have to know when to stop a bad idea

Sheryl Sandberg We have to know when to stop a bad ideaSheryl Sandberg We have to know when to stop a bad ideaBelow is the full transcript and video of Sheryl Sandbergs commencement speech to MITs Class of 2018President, esteemed faculty, proud parents, devoted friends, squirming siblings but especially Class of 2018 Congratulations, you made itIt wasnt always easy. You plowed through four years of problem sets. You conquered the snow of 2015. You survived way too many Weekly Wednesdays at the Muddy Charles Pub and learned this important life lesson Theres no such thing as a free chicken wing.Today, you are graduates of the fruchtwein revered technical institution in the world. The Harvard people tried to get me to say most revered institution within a 2-mile radius. I said no, but youll soon find out how persistent alumni associations can be. Just ask the class of 68 Theyve been to mora fundraisers than youve eaten chicken wings. One thing I remember from graduation is that feeling o f turning one corner and leid being able to landlandsee clearly around the next.Itscommencement seasonFollow LaddersCommencement Addresses magazine on Flipboardto watch and read all of the most inspiring speeches from this year and years past. For someone like me who, yes, very annoyingly started studying for finals the first day of the semester, that was unsettling. Graduation was the first time in my life that the next steps were leid clearly laid out. I remember the feeling of excitement and possibility, mixed in with just a teeny bit of crushing uncertainty. If you know exactly what youre going to do for your career, raise your hand. There are always some. That is impressive.I did not. I didnt know where I would fit in best or contribute most. ansicht days, when I need advice, I turn to Mark Zuckerberg, but back then, he was in elementary school.I was sure of only one thing I didnt want to go into business, and it never even occurred to me to go into technology.I guess thats a war ning for those of you who put your hands up Certainty is one of the great privileges of youth. Things wont always end up as you think, but you will gain valuable lessons along lifes uncertain path. The lesson I want to share with you today is one I learned in my very first job out of college working on a leprosy treatment program in India. Since biblical times, leprosy patients were ostracized from communities to prevent the disease from spreading.By the time I graduated from college, the technical challenges had been solved. Doctors could easily diagnose leprosy that showed up in skin patches on your chest and medicine could easily treat the disease. But the stigma remained, so patients hid their disease instead of seeking care.I will never forget meeting patients for the first time, extending my arm and watching them recoil because they were not used to even being touched. The real breakthrough didnt come from technicians or doctors but from local community leaders. They knew that t hey had to erase the stigma before they could erase the disease, so they wrote plays and songs in local languages and went around the local community, encouraging people to come forward without fear. They understood that the most difficult problems and the greatest opportunities we have are not technical. They are menschenfreundlich. In other words, its not just about technology. Its about people. This is a lesson youve learned here at MIT, and not just those of you graduating with technical degrees, but those who studied management or urban planning, or Course 11 or Course 15, in MIT speak. You know its people who build technology, and people who use it to make their lives better, to get educated, to get health care, to share an infinite number of cat videos that are all unique and totally adorable - unless youre a dog person.Today, anyone with an internet connection can inspire millions with a single sentence or a single image. This gives extraordinary power to those who use it to d o good - to march for equality to reignite the movement against sexual harassment to rally around the things they care about and the people they want to be there for be there for.But it also empowers those who seek to do harm. When everyone has a voice, some raise them in hatred. When everyone can share, some share lies. When everyone can organize, some organize against the things we value the most.Journalist Anne OHare McCormick wrote about the impact of new technology. She said we had created the ultimate democracy, where anything said by anyone could be heard by everyone, but she worried about whether it provoked partisanship or tolerance, whether it was time wasted or time well spent. She wondered if it explained all the furious fence-building, the fanned-up nationalisms, and the angers and neuroses of our time. She wrote this in 1932, about the radio - and by the way, she was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for journalism. The fact that the challenges we face today are not new does not make them less pressing. Like the generations before us, we have to solve the problems that our technology brings.I believe there are three ways we can deal with these challenges We can retreat in fear,we can barrel ahead with a single-minded belief in our technology or we can fight like hell to do all the good we can do with the understanding that what we build will be used by people and people are capable of great beauty and great cruelty.I encourage you to choose the third option To be clear-eyed optimists to see that building technology that supports equality, democracy, truth and kindness means looking around corners - and throwing up every possible roadblock against hate, violence and deception. You might be thinking, given some of the issues facebook inc has had, isnt what Im saying hitting pretty close to home?Yes. It is.I am proud of what Facebook has done around the world - proud of the connections people have created. Proud of how people use Facebook to organize for democracy, the Womens March, Black Lives Matter. Proud of how people use Facebook to start and grow businesses and create jobs all around the world. But at Facebook, we didnt see all the risks coming, and we didnt do enough to stop them. Its painful when you miss something, when you make the mistake of believing so much in the good you are seeing that you dont see the bad. Its hard when you know that you let people down.In the middle of one of my toughest moments, Michael Miller, former Superintendent of the Naval Academy, kindly reached out to remind me that smooth seas never make good sailors.Hes right. The times in my life that I have learned the most have definitely been the hardest. That is when you will learn the most about yourself. You can almost feel yourself growing you can feel the growing pains. When you own your mistakes, you can work harder to correct them and even harder to prevent the next ones.Thats my job now. It wont be easy and its not going to be fas t. But we will see it through.Yet the larger challenge is one all of us here must face. The role of technology in our lives is growing and that means our relationship with technology is changing. We have to change too. We have to recognize the full weight of our responsibilities. Its not enough to be technologists, we have to make sure that technology serves people. Its not enough or even possible to be neutral. Tools are shaped by the minds that make them as well as the hands that use them. Its not enough to have a good idea we have to know when to stop a bad one. This is hard because technology changes faster than society. When I was in college, no one had a cell phone. Today there are more cell phones than people on earth. We are in one of the most remarkable moments in human history and you will not just live through it, you will shape it.Many of you will work on technologies that will change the world. You will connect the rest of the world, create new jobs and disrupt old ones, give machines new powers to think and give us the means to communicate in ways we havent even thought of.We are not passive observers of these changes. We cant be. Trends do not just happen, they are the result of choices people make.We are not indifferent creators, we have a duty of care and when even with the best of intentions you go astray, as many of us have, you have the responsibility to course correct. We are accountable to the people who use what we build, to our colleagues, to ourselves and to our values. So if you are thinking about joining a kollektiv, an NGO, a startup or a company, ask if they are doing good for the world.Research at that other school down the river shows that we become more creative when we ask Could we? And we become more ethical when we ask Should we?So ask both.Know that you have an obligation to never shy away from doing the right thing, because the fight to ensure tech is used for good is never over to make sure that technology reflects and upholds the right values, we have to build with awareness, and the best way to be more aware is to have more people in the room with different voices and different views. There are still skeptics out there when it comes to the value of diversity. They dismiss it as something we do to feel better, not to be better. They are wrong. We cannot build technology for equality and democracy unless we have and we harness diversity in its creation.More people with more diverse backgrounds are working in technology than ever before and are graduating in your class today than ever before. But our industry is still lagging at MIT. Even the newest technology can contain the oldest prejudices and our lack of diversity is at the root of some of the things we fail to see and prevent. It is up to all of us to fix that, people like me, and people like you everyone graduating today and all the graduates to come.So continue the example you have lived at MIT. Continue to engage with people outside your discipline, your gender, your race. Talk with people who grew up in different places, who believe different things, who live and worship differently than you do. Talk with them, listen to them, get their perspectives as you have done here and encourage them to work in and with technology too.To all the current and future educators here today, lets reform our educational system so we give everyone the opportunity to learn to code. This is a basic language now that needs to be taught in all of our schools so that more people have a choice. When some kids learn it and some dont, that creates an unequal playing field long before people go into the workforce. And to all the future leaders in tech, thats you. Know that you have a chance to right wrongs, not reinforce them.Tech institutions can be some of the strongest voices for progress in the workplace, but we can always do better. Encourage your employers and policymakers to ensure that everyone, including contractors, earns a living wage. Fight fo r paid family leave with equal time for all genders because equality in the workplace will not happen until we have equality in the home and because no one should be forced to choose between the job they need and the family they love. Give people bereavement leave because when tragedy strikes, we need to be there for each other. And build workplaces where everyone, everyone, is treated with respect. We need to stop harassment and hold both perpetrators and enablers accountable and we need to make a personal commitment to stop racism and sexism, including the expressions of bias that become commonplace and accepted instead of rejected and fought.I want you to know that you can impact the workplace from the very day you enter it.A few months ago, LeanIn.org surveyed people to understand how the MeToo movement was influencing work. After so many brave women spoke out, we found evidence of an unintended backlash Almost half of male managers in the U.S. are now uncomfortable having a work meeting alone with a woman and even more uncomfortable having a work dinner alone with a female colleague. These are the informal moments where men have long gotten more mentoring than women - and now it looks like it could get worse. For the men here Someone may pull you aside in your first week at work and say, never being alone with a woman. You know theyre wrong. You know how to work with all people. So give them advice instead.Tell them they have the responsibility to make access equal for women and that if they dont feel comfortable having dinner with women, they shouldnt have dinner with men. Group lunches for everyone. In one of my early jobs, I had a boss who treated me quite differently from the two men on my team and not in a good way. He spoke to them with kindness and respect but belittled me publicly. I tried to talk to him, but that made it worse. My two male teammates right out of school themselves stepped up and it stopped.Even if youre the most junior person in the r oom, you have power. Use it, and use it well.Class of 2018, its not the technology you build that will define you. Its the teams you build and what people do with your technology. We have to get this right because we need technology to solve our greatest challenges. When I sat where you are sitting today, I never thought I would work in technology, but somewhere along that uncertain path, I learned new lessons and became a technologist. And technologists have always been optimists. Were optimists because we have to be. If you want to do something that has never been done before, so many people will tell you it cannot be done.Graduates of this amazing university have helped sequence the human genome, paved the way for the treatment of AIDS and made an MIT balloon appear in the middle of the Harvard-Yale football game. Were optimists because we zulauf the numbers. Our world can feel polarized and dangerous, but in many critical ways, we are so much better off. A century ago, global life e xpectancy was 35 for 2 billion people.Today it is 70, for 7 billion. When I graduated, 1 in 3 people lived in extreme poverty. Today it is 1 in 10. It is still way too high but we have made more progress in our lifetimes than in all of human history. Our challenge now is to be clear-eyed optimists, or to paraphrase President Kennedy, optimists without illusions To build technology that improves lives and gives voice to those who often have none while preventing misuse, to build teams that better reflect the world around us with all its complexity and diversity. If we succeed - and well succeed - we will build technology that better serves not just some of us, but all of us.MIT graduate and former faculty member David Baltimore won a Nobel Prize for his work on the interaction between viruses and the genetic material of the cell. But before that, he helped bring biologists, lawyers and physicians together to debate new gene editing technology. They were worried that it had the potenti al to cause more harm than good, but they concluded that the opportunities for progress were too great, so they created voluntary ethical guidelines and continued the research. That decision led to some of the greatest advances in genetic science and medicine. It also set a standard that we as technologists can follow Seek advice from people with different perspectives, look deeply at the risks as well as the benefits of new technology and if those risks can be managed, keep going even in the face of uncertainty.Class of 2018, you are now graduates of one of the most forward-thinking places on earth. You will have tremendous opportunities and you will be highly sought after. You will use what you learned here to work on some of the most critical questions we face.I hope you will use your influence to make sure technology is a force for good in the world. Technology needs a human heartbeat the things that bring us joy and the things that bring us together are the things that matter most .The future is in your hands. Congratulations

What the Future Holds for Accountants

What the Future Holds for AccountantsWhat the Future Holds for AccountantsIn many companies, financial professionals are expected to do a lot more than just the traditional accounting and financial functions, especially in the financial services industry. Particularly interesting welches asurvey commissioned by the finance and accounting job placement firm Robert Half Management Resources on just this very topic. The bottom-line finding of this survey was that, of the 1,400 CFOs surveyed by Robert Half, covering a broad sample of companies by size and industry, the vast majority expect senior accountants to have increasing amounts of their time devoted to non-traditional functions, such as strategic planning and information technology projects. On average, the CFOs surveyed believe that a typical senior accountant spends just over a third of their time on such non-traditional functions, and they projected this figure to climb steadily over time. Study Caveats Of course, this is a survey and not a detailed, scientific time and motion study. Moreover, it is a survey in which high-level managers make guesses about how subordinates (some of them well down the line) actually utilize their time. So, while you should take the actual numbers with a certain amount of skepticism, it mucksmuschenstill seems to prove the point that senior accountants are expected to do a lot more than simply tally up figures and produce reports - and that unterstellung expectations are growing steadily. Case Study While this writer is not an accountant by trade, he did spend several years in the 1990s as a departmental controller at Merrill Lynch and spent something on the order of 90% of his time on non-accounting functions such as Market researchOperations, systems and information technology liaisonLiaison with management scienceChief of staff for the line manager in charge of the departmentAttending higher-level staff meetings in the department heads absenceHuman resources liai sonDepartmental ombudsman (confidential sounding board for employee complaints)Chief morale officer for the departmentDeveloping compensation schemes for high-net-worth specialistsStrategic advisor to the line manager in charge of the department In the Robert Half survey, 20% of respondents felt that the typical senior accountant would spend over 50% of their time on non-traditional functions by the year 2018 or thereabouts. This shows how ahead of the management curve Merrill Lynch was in the past decades since this authors experience as a departmental controller was typical for his peer group. The Bottom Line The primary lesson for accountants here is that career advancement in the near future is bound to depend more and more on the ability to take on duties and add value far beyond the relatively narrowjob descriptions historically associated with accounting positions. Understanding Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) inside and out, and flawlessly compiling numbe rs as prescribed under these conventions, is not sufficient for the upwardly-mobile and ambitious accountant these days. A large part of the story, not addressed directly by the Robert Half survey, is the effect of corporate downsizing on staffing levels and the duties of employees. As more and more firms adopt lean management structures, multitasking by employees becomes increasingly important and expected. Additionally, by virtue of their intimate awareness of a companys financial position, as the compilers of the numbers, accounting professionals are the obvious persons being looked to for analysis and interpretation of those same numbers. In short, few people in a company are better situated to play these roles than members of the accounting staff. Finally, because of the facility with numbers and attention to detail that the accounting profession demands, accounting professionals are seen as having precisely the correct discipline of mind to deal effectively with other quantita tive matters, even those with no direct connection to or commonalities with accounting itself.

4 Tips to Stay Productive This Summer Season

4 Tips to Stay Productive This Summer Season 4 Tips to Stay Productive This Summer Season Achieving balance over these summer months is paramount so that youre fully present at home and at work no one desires to feel overwhelmed with work when its a beautiful summer day outside, nor should a worker catch a case of summer fever and ditch the sekretariat to hang by the pool all day. Sometimes it can be hard to know where to draw the lines and what steps to take to get there. So to help balance work and play as the temperature (and out of arbeitszimmer fun levels) increases, below are a few tips that could help you figure out your priorities and how to manage them. Hopefully, the following four tips can aid you in achieving a balanced schedule and mindset, both in the workplace and at homeDont overcommit. Although its hard to say no to anyone or anything especially as summer activities increase, its even harder fulfilling many obligations at this hectic time. You cant be everything to everyone, and if you try, you will end up burning yourself out before you even begin to enjoy the warmer weather. And, if you dont balance your obligations now, youll either have to catch up on work when you begin feeling better and return to the office or feel unfulfilled because you didnt spend time with loved ones doing summer activities.Take control of your workload. Are there any projects you can delegate to other team members? Can you hold off on starting any new projects until the summers end? Figure out what projects are most important to complete before you check out of the office for a vacation and prioritize those items with your team so that everyone is on the same page. That way, there wont be any miscommunication on what needs to be worked on and everyone has a laser focus on getting certain projects done until the summer is over.Create mini goals for yourself. Work can become overwhelming with a flurry of requests for things that must be accomplished, especially befo re a planned vacation or even summer company event or initiative. You can feel a great deal of pressure to complete all of your tasks before you begin to take care of your personal obligations this summer season. To keep from feeling swamped, break up your tasks into small goals that you can accomplish every day. Do you need to finish an end-of quarter report for your supervisor? Divide the report into small, manageable chunks that you can complete daily so that the entire report is done before the end of the quarter or summer term. Need to reach a sales goal before the summers end or pending time off? Figure out how many transactions you need to make from now until you leave the office, and create a daily sales target. By making small goals that you can easily accomplish, you can track your progress at home and at work and get everything done by your deadline. Feeling a sense of achievement and checking off your list at work can actually reduce your stress level and create a sense o f momentum that can carry over to your personal to-dos.Remember to communicate your schedule. If you plan to be out of the office for an extended period of time, remember to let your manager and team know and remind them on your last day. If youve blocked time on your schedule to check in at any point during your vacation, share that with them as well. Its important for your team to know when they can contact you and when they cant. Its also important for you because it allows you to have time away from the office, not just physically but mentally, too. This same tip can also apply to your personal life.Enjoy the summer season by slowing down. It may seem like the end of the world if you dont get everything done. But, if you slow down, you can eliminate bringing stress into the office once your vacation is over (and the summer has ended). Be careful about trying to wrap up too much at work at one time. Take your time finishing up your work tasks so you dont make mistakes that could be costly, both in time and money, down the road. Be available to your colleagues when youre out of the office, but dont feel like you have to be connected 24/7 to your email or your phone for updates from work.Committing to less can result in mora time to enjoy the summer season. Enjoy the time with your loved ones. Take a few minutes to reflect on the year so far, and determine how to make the remainder of 2014 even better. By slowing down, you can truly savor the gifts and spirit of the summer season and feel refreshed and ready to go once your vacation is over.A special thank you to Sandy Mazur of Spherion Staffing Services for contributing to this article.

6 Branding Tips for Job Seekers

6 Branding Tips for Job Seekers 6 Branding Tips for Job Seekers The chances are good that you, too, are abrand that companies and recruiters are buying. If youre doing it right, your brand should become the heart and soul of your career your brand should bewhat ultimately allows you to stay visible in an increasingly congestedworld.Because brands matter so much for job seekers, I want to offer some suggestions and branding tips to consider1. Be OriginalWhat makes you unique or special? Is it your voice? Height? Eye color? Athletic ability? Fluency in foreign languages? An invention or patent? Whatever it is, use it to your advantage. Can you imagine Barbara Streisand with a different nose, Jay Leno with a new chin, or Cindy Crawford without her mole?Everyone remembers the original, but the copycats start blending together after a while, so differentiate yourself to stand out from the pack. Be remarkable and extraordinary to bestattungs attention and get noticed. Good is not good en ough what makes yougreat? When you leverage what makes you unique, people will remember your authentic brand.2. Be CreativeHow do you want people to think, feel, act, or react after interacting with you vs. other candidates or classmates? What are four words that come to mind when people describe you? Are those wordshow you want to be described? As George Washington Carver once said, When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world.3. Be HonestTurns out that telling the truth about what you are and are not what you can and cant do is very refreshing. Who would have thought that in 2015, brutal honesty would be the killer application?Because there are so many good candidates on the market, companies tend to hire the people they like and trust most. Let your brand be known for speaking the truth, and you will become the trusted advocate and go-to source for many. People dont always want to hear the truth, but theyll respect you for telling it and when theyre ready to listen, theyll remember you for it.4. Be RelevantBrands arent created in a vacuum. They require lots of attention, care, and feeding. The process of creating a brand for yourself includes developing a mission, vision, unique positioning, and so on. You must define your brand, communicate it, and review it periodically to ensure that itstays current. For example, look at Lady Gagas early years of fame when she was dressing like a crazy person (remember the dress made of meat?) vs. Lady Gaga now, the woman who pays homage toThe Sound of Musicand duets wth Tony Bennett. The branding basics totenstill apply when the brand is you you need to have a core message, a brand promise, and visual and verbal identification and you need to fully integrate all the components. Youll need brand positioning, brand architecture, and a brand strategy to develop a promise that resonates clearly.5. Be ConsistentDevelop a cohesive message and live it every day. The re petition reinforces your key points, so people will remember them. It takes time to build great brands no one wins Olympic gold medals, Grammy awards, Oscars, or anything of importance overnight. These things require an investment of your time and energy. Every transaction and experience is an opportunity to build trust in your brand.Make sure you are the same person online and offline, and clean up your digital dirt Hiring managers do not need to see those spring break photos or the party at the frat house with all your drunk friends, so take them down6. Be PassionateIf you remember nothing else, remember this suggestion. If you are passionate, you can overcome any shortfalls you may experience with the prior five tips.Everyone loves to work with people who are passionate about what they do passionate peoplemake life much more fun and interesting. Build your brand around what you enjoy, and remember the words of John Ruskin When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece.I hope Ive convinced you that great candidate brands do in fact start with great personal brands Your brand should provide a foundation to help you connect with companies looking to hire. Never forget that you are your brand, so you must live it 24/7

How to Use Nonverbal Communication in Hiring

How to Use Nonverbal Communication in Hiring How to Use Nonverbal Communication in Hiring Have you ever made up your mind about a job candidate based on the way he sat in your lobby? Did you confirm that opinion when he walked across the room and shook your hand? Awareness of nonverbal communication and the messages job searchers send does influence your evaluation of job candidates â€" and it should. Aside from protected characteristics such as gender, race, and weight, you can learn a lot about your prospective employee from their nonverbal communication. You’ll want to watch for nonverbal signals that tell you about the person’s attitude, outlook, interests, and approach. They speak louder than the verbal communication during the interview process. The nonverbal communication helps you confidently assess each candidate’s credentials with regard to the: skills necessary to do the job, behavioral characteristics you have identified as necessary for success in the job, andculture and environment of your organization. These are examples of nonverbal communication you need to pay attention to and “hear.” You can believe what you see; first impressions matter. First Impressions The first few minutes in an interview setting are so important that almost nothing else matters. You take a look at the candidate and note all of the nonverbal messages she is communicating. You form impressions from the candidate’s posture, handshake, outfit and accessories, space usage, attentiveness, eye contact, and facial expressions. And, then you listen to what she has to say in response to your questions. Posture and Space Usage Is your candidate sitting comfortably yet upright, but not stiffly, in his chair? Does he walk with self-assured ease? He’s likely confident and comfortable with himself. Slouchy posture speaks loudly about sloppy work and low self-esteem. A posture that enables an individual to take up the appropriate amount of space in the room tells you that the applicant is secure in his abilities. Sloppy posture gives the impression of low energy and carelessness. Pay attention. Handshake Notice whether your candidate has a firm, dry, solid handshake. Again, a confident, comfortable person uses the handshake as a positive nonverbal interaction. The handshake should assure you of the candidate’s desire for a positive first interaction and impression. A limp handshake signals low confidence and low self-esteem. An excessively strong handshake may tell you the person is overly aggressive or trying to steamroll you. Clothing and Accessories No matter how informal your work environment, a professional job candidate needs to wear a suit for her first meeting. The selected outfit tells you how well the candidate will interact with and be perceived by customers. The chosen accessories either telegraph professionalism â€" or they don’t. A briefcase, a leather portfolio, a nice pen, leather purse, and shined shoes present a solid, professional appearance. They tell you the candidate cared enough to want to make a good first impression. Makeup, perfume, and jewelry, worn tastefully, can add to your perception of their professionalism. Dirty fingernails or scuffed shoes tell you the person is careless, too hurried, or unaware of the impression they have on others. Not good. Alternatively, if the candidate attempted to look polished and professional for the interview â€" and doesn’t â€" this is likely as good as it gets. Decide what works for your organization, and make your best selection. The candidate’s chosen clothing and accessories are a form of powerful nonverbal communication. Listen when hiring. Attentiveness, eye contact, body language, and facial expressions are  nonverbal communications  that can tell you much about the candidates you consider hiring. Attentiveness and Eye Contact Watch the listening and interactive behavior of your candidate. He should act as if he is engaged by leaning slightly forward in his chair to close some of the distance between himself and the interviewer. You want to hire a candidate who can comfortably put his portfolio on your desk to take notes, yet not take up too much of your space. You want an employee who can maintain comfortable eye contact without staring or forced attentiveness. If the candidate spends the interview with his eyes moving all over the room, rarely looking at you, this can signal a lack of confidence â€" or worse â€" he doesn’t care. Long, forced eye contact can indicate an overly aggressive person who does not care about your comfort. And, if he doesn’t care about your comfort during the interview, that behavior won’t get better when you hire him. Listen also to the candidate’s responses to your questions. Did he hear your question? Did he answer succinctly and share stories, or ramble incessantly off topic? The former tells you he prepared for the interview and has success stories to share. The latter signals unprepared, ill-at-ease, or that he didn’t care enough to pay attention. Facial Expressions and Body Language ”What you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say,” said Ralph Waldo Emerson in one of my favorite quotations. And, nothing is as communicative as the facial expressions and body language of your candidates. Whole books have been written interpreting facial expressions and body language. The key to listening to their nonverbal communication is whether their facial expressions and body language match the words spoken. Facial expressions that fail to match the words spoken can indicate serious discomfort or lying â€" neither desirable behaviors in a candidate. A candidate that never makes eye contact and talks to a spot over your shoulder is uncomfortable and demonstrating a lack of confidence. You want to hire an employee whose facial expressions are consistent with and punctuate her words. Body language speaks loudly, too. Is the candidate leaning back in his seat with his legs crossed at the knee? He’s too relaxed for an interview setting. Has he taken over your whole desk with his arms and accessories? He’s overly aggressive. Does he lean back with his hands crossed behind his head? It is aggressive interview behavior in the extreme. Don’t expect less aggressive behavior if you hire him. If the candidate makes a statement and looks away from you or appears nervous, she’s probably not telling the truth. If she stares into your eyes as she tells her story, she may be fabricating. If she taps her pen constantly, twists her jewelry at the end of every sentence, strokes her hair every few minutes, she is sending all sorts of messages about her discomfort â€" with the interview setting or with her skills and abilities in general? It’s hard to tell. Listen to what they are not saying. Conclusion Interviewing and  hiring people  who will be  great employees  who  fit well in your organization  is a challenge. Listening to the nonverbal communication of your candidates can tell you as much about the candidates as their spoken words, their references, and their experience. Nonverbal communication matters.

5 Ways to Help Your Employees Perform Under Pressure

5 Ways to Help Your Employees Perform Under Pressure 5 Ways to Help Your Employees Perform Under Pressure Many people can do a great job when they have sufficient time and no stress. Others actually need some pressure and stress  to get a project done. Your goal is to help all of your employees perform when under pressure. This is optimum for the success of your business. Heres what you need to think about to help your employees deal with pressure. Hire Employees Who Are Resilient People are different. Instinctively you know that, but you want to hire the person with those great skills regardless of how they do under pressure. In fact, you didnt even ask about pressure, did you?  This is actually a hard question  to ask because no one is going to say, in a job interview, “I sure fall apart when I experience pressure on the job.” Instead, you need to come up with ways to find out how people deal with pressure, without giving them the opportunity to speak positively about something that isnt positive. Try the following questions: Describe the work environment in which you thrive.Tell me about your favorite boss. What did he or she do that made your experience a good one.We get a lot of last-minute demands from the powers that be in our department. How have you dealt with such demands in previous jobs? In addition to asking pertinent questions, share an honest description of your workplace. Dont sell the job as all sunshine and roses when its a tremendously stressful workplace. Candidates can self-select out of the running if their style of work doesnt match with your style of operation. Acknowledge Above and Beyond Performance by Employees Many employees are willing to work their tails off for the good of the business, but only as long as their work is recognized. If you simply expect everyone to put in 60 hours a week, or to do last minute jobs because senior management cant make up their minds in a timely fashion, youll find morale dropping. You need to give praise and appropriate promotions  and bonuses when people perform under pressure. It makes them more willing to do the same level of work again later. If your pay scale is at your industry midpoint, but you demand more of your employees than your competitors do, keeping people on staff will challenge you. You have to acknowledge that more work and more stress deserves a higher paycheck- or youll lose your best employees to an employer who does. Youll find your best performers taking off to find a more relaxed work environment. After all, if they can make the same amount of money for doing less stressful work, why not take it? Provide Time Off Similar to Comp Time- But Not Comp Time If you work at an accounting firm, every single person in the firm is going to work  long hours under tremendous pressure during tax season. But once those returns are all filed? Let people take a couple of days off  that doesnt count against their PTO. Throw a party. Let people work a couple of 30 hour weeks at full pay since for the past 6 weeks theyve been working 80 hour weeks. Make it clear, when your employees are pulling all-nighters or working on the weekend to keep a particularly fussy client happy, that you know what they are doing and that you will let them take next Friday off. While you dont legally have to give time off to exempt employees, who work extra hours, its a nice thing to do. (Keep in mind that you never want to provide time off by tracking the exact number of hours worked against time off.)   For non-exempt employees, you have to pay appropriate overtime no matter if you do give comp time in the next week. You cant get out of overtime pay unless the comp time is in the same week. So, for example, if you live in a state where overtime begins after 40 hours, and your employee works 40 hours by the end of Thursday, she can take Friday off, and you wont have to pay overtime. But, if she puts in 60 hours, you cant let her work only 20 hours the next week and not pay overtime for the 20 hours of overtime she worked.  Overtime is mandatory in private business. Provide an Outlet for Employees That Will Help Them Deal With Stress Wellness programs are extremely popular- and for good reason. They lower insurance rates  and many employees enjoy them. If you do the right type of wellness program, it can also reduce stress in your office. For instance, an onsite yoga class during lunch can allow employees to refresh during their day. A lunchtime walking group can do the same. A company subsidized gym program can also encourage people to get moving and lower their stress level. Likewise, healthy food in the break room can provide not only food for the stomach but food for the brain. Cheese and nuts are going to give better, sustainable energy than a candy bar from the vending machine. Granted, its much easier to keep a vending machine stocked with candy than it is to keep the kitchen stocked with mixed nuts (and if someone has a nut allergy, you might not want to do that), but it can actually help reduce stress. Remember the Boss Has Some Control Over the Stress If youre the boss and your department is always stressed out, you can probably change that. Sure, if youre running a medical residency program, youre not going to be able to remove all of the stress because stress is one of the goals. (You want your doctors to perform well no matter the conditions are like.) Examine your own methods. Are you setting ?the proper goals? Are you pushing back against senior management when you should? Do you have the ability to say no? Its your job, as the manager, to create an environment where your employees thrive. If thats not happening, you need to change your approach. Thats part of your job. Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

How to Find Legitimate Transcription Work From Home

How to Find Legitimate Transcription Work From Home How to Find Legitimate Transcription Work From Home If youre a good typist, transcription might be the right work-at-home job for you. However, keep in mind theres more to transcription than simply typing. And as with any work-at-home opportunity, you need to be on the lookout for scams and bad deals. What Is a Transcriptionist? A transcriptionist listens to a recording, sometimes using a foot pedal to control the speed of the playback, and types what she hears, interpreting and editing by varying degrees depending on the type of transcription job. Minimum speeds for transcription jobs range from 60 to 85 words per minute (WPM). Types of transcription jobs include corporate, legal, general and medical plus there are captioning jobs, which may or may not be in real-time. Typically to get work as a home transcriptionist you will need to have experience doing transcription in an office setting first, and for real-time captioning, you need to be experienced and certified in court reporting. Most home transcription work is done on an independent contractor-basis, meaning that you are not an employee. Read more about the difference between employees and contractors. Typing Online Is Not the Same There are online typing jobs or data entry work that are similar to transcription but that don’t typically require the same level of skill,  and they won’t pay as much as true transcription. If you are starting out, these may be the right work-at-home jobs for you. But you just need to understand what you’re getting into. Often, there is a catch. For instance, some of these companies might only pay after you earn a certain amount$50 for instance. However, it might you might find that there isn’t enough work available for you to earn that much or that it is just too time-consuming to make it worthwhile. Watch Out for Certification Scams Be wary of any hiring company that tries to sell you transcription certification services, particularly those that make hiring you contingent on completing their certification program. Companies that turn you down for a transcription job but then encourage you to sign up for a transcription certification, usually at a cost of a few hundred dollars, are more than likely work-at-home scams. And if they are not outright scams, they still may be a bad deal just the same. Whenever you consider getting certification to improve your job prospects, be sure the certification has value at multiple companies, not just the one that is encouraging you to get it. Legitimate transcription companies will evaluate your typing speed and accuracy through testing, and look at your resume to determine if your experience matches their needs. Certification for general transcription is not usually a factor in determining if you are qualified for a transcription job. (However, for medical transcription jobs certification is usually needed, but there are specific types of accreditation that are accepted all companies utilizing medical transcriptions.) Legitimate companies generally do not charge fees for you to work for them, though there can be some start-up costs for contractors (and sometimes employees). However, in transcription, these tend to be for durable equipment that you could use with other clients. Be very careful of any company selling a “business opportunity.”? How to Find a Legitimate Home Jobs Before you even start looking for home transcription work, test your typing speed, even if youre an old pro. Here are a few free online typing tests and practice files. Next read all about home transcription jobs and finally browse this list of companies with home transcription work.

These are the issues a hiring manager will dismiss you for

These are the issues a hiring manager will dismiss you for These are the issues a hiring manager will dismiss you for Do you talk politics around the water cooler? Debate immigration? Rail about gender rights? All these conversations are important, but they can be downright dangerous at work â€" even during the period before you get hired. Airtasker polled over 1,000 people, 204 with hiring responsibilities and 805 employees, about the hiring process, layoffs, and coworker discussions. What they found: Political discussion of all kinds can put your standing and even your job at risk. They are literally the last kind of views you want to express at work. However unfairly, your views â€" if known â€" can stop your potential hiring right at the door.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Perhaps in a search for cultural fit, hiring managers feel the need to know future employees’ stances on possibly controversial views. And they’ve admitted to not hiring those candidates based on opinions they don ’t like.Below, see 29% of hiring managers dismissing a candidate for his or her stance on racial equality, and 27% for their take on gender equality. The dangers of social media in the hiring processSocial media is a great place to rant about politics. Unfortunately, it’s often one of the first places hiring managers go to check you out as a candidate, as 69% of them admitted. Facebook is the major source of snooping, at 91%, followed by Instagram (62%), Twitter (56%), and LinkedIn (55%).Nearly half (48%) of hiring managers responded that they wouldn’t hire perfectly qualified candidates if they expressed strong, controversial political opinions on social media. (So set your Facebook to friends-only, and make your Instagram private while you’re job-searching).One respondent with hiring responsibilities explained that his main reason for scouring candidates’ social channels for political talk was that he wanted everyone to get along. “I feel it is important to keep politic s out of the office as much as possible. We look through prospective employee’ social media to see if they are overtly vocal and outlandish in their views, not to weed out the ones we don’t agree with. We need everyone to get along and work as a team.”Why was I really laid off?Forty-one percent of laid-off employees felt that their layoff wasn’t strictly about performance, but was related to their identity, beliefs, or physical appearance. According to respondents, some of them were right.Again, the theme continues that making controversial political views on a wide scope of themes known at work can put an employee at risk â€" either fairly or unfairly.Keep talkin’For those who do engage in political water-cooler chat at work â€" or are simply part of a minority group â€" here are the percentages who feel like they’re treated negatively based on their… Political views: 14% Gender: 13% Race/ethnicity: 12% Education level: 10% Stance on LGBTQ+ rights: 7% Stance on immigration: 7% Stance on gender equality: 6% Stance on racial equality: 5% What about us?Since the #MeToo movement blew up in the fall of 2017, 28% of male respondents said they’ve changed the way they interact with female colleagues. The jury is still out on whether those changes are good or bad. Almost three-fourths (70%) of men said they were being more careful about what they said, which seems innocuous enough. But “avoiding interactions with women” (37%) and “avoiding being alone with women” (27%) are more problematic and prevent women from moving up in organizations.

Frustrated Heres the one secret to never getting angry again

Frustrated Here's the one secret to never getting angry again Frustrated Here's the one secret to never getting angry again We all get frustrated. The guy  in front of you is driving like an idiot.  Your boss is being a jerk. Your partner  isn’t listening. And sometimes these all happen to you on  the same day. What’s the fix for this?  One guy came up with a solution that deals with all of these problems - and more.Albert Ellis was quite a character. He was controversial. Outspoken. A bit of a rebel.  In fact, the book he’s most famous for was titled:  How To Stubbornly Refuse To Make Yourself Miserable About Anything-yes, Anything.Clever but a bit unprofessional, right? Here’s the thing: according to a survey  of psychologists he was the 2nd most influential psychotherapist ever. Sigmund Freud came in third.  His stuff works. And it’s as simple as ABCD - quite literally, as you’ll see below. So how can you never be frustrated again?  Let’s break it down. The tyranny of “should”Let’s cut to the chase, shall we? Here’s what you need to  take away from Ellis’ work:You  don’t get frus trated  because of events. You get  frustrated  because of your beliefs. And where did this idea start? Ancient philosophy. Stoicism. That’s where Ellis found the concept. And then he proved it really worked.Via  How To Stubbornly Refuse To Make Yourself Miserable About Anything-yes, Anything:…if you understand how you upset yourself by slipping into irrational shoulds, oughts, demands, and commands, unconsciously sneaking them into your thinking, you can just about always stop disturbing yourself about anything. You’re stuck in traffic and that makes you angry, right? Wrong.Traffic happens. But you think it shouldn’t happen to you.  And the thing that’s making you miserable is that word “should.”Here’s an example. I  say, “This headache remedy probably won’t work but give it a shot.” So you try it. And it doesn’t work. You’re not frustrated.Okay, same situation  but I say, “This always works.” It fails. Now you’re annoyed. What changed? Your expectatio n.Or you tell a five-year old to stop yelling. They don’t listen. You don’t get that bothered. After all, the kid is five. But if you tell me to stop yelling and I don’t listen, you get angry. What’s different? “Eric should  stop. He’s an adult.”Again, nothing changed but your belief.Pretty straightforward, right? But that leads to a question: how do you change your beliefs? Ellis has an answer.(For more on a fun way to be happier and more successful, click here.)The universe is not taking orders from you. (Sorry)It’s as simple as ABCD. Really.A is adversity. Traffic is awful.B is your beliefs. And often they’re irrational. “This shouldn’t happen to me.”  Well, guess what, Bubba? It is happening.C is consequences. You get angry, frustrated or depressed. In very few cases can you change A. But you can change B. And that will change C. So let’s bring in the 4th letter.D: Dispute your irrational beliefs.  â€œWait a second. When did the universe guarantee me a t rouble-free existence? It didn’t. Traffic has happened before. It will happen again. And I will survive.”Look for beliefs that hold the words “should”, “ought” or “must.” That’s where the problems lie. You’re allowed to wish, want and desire. Nobody is saying you need to be an emotionless lump.Via  How To Stubbornly Refuse To Make Yourself Miserable About Anything-yes, Anything:“I would very much like or prefer to have success, approval, or comfort,” and then end with the conclusion, “But I don’t have to have it. I won’t die without it. And I could be happy (though not as happy) without it.”But you can’t demand the universe bend to your will. That’s where the frustration and anger creep in - because that  godlike insistence isn’t rational.Via  How To Stubbornly Refuse To Make Yourself Miserable About Anything-yes, Anything:When you insist, however, that you always must have or do something, you often think in this way: “Because I would very mu ch like or prefer to have success, approval, or pleasure, I absolutely, under practically all conditions, must have it. And if I don’t get it, as I completely must, it’s awful, I can’t stand it, I am an inferior person for not arranging to get it, and the world is a horrible place for not giving me what I must have! I am sure that I’ll never get it, and therefore I can’t be happy at all!”When you’re angry, frustrated or depressed look for those irrational beliefs.“People should treat me kindly and fairly all the time.” Sound rational? Hardly.“I ought to  succeed at this. If I don’t, I’m a failure and a loser.” Really?“This person must love me back or I’ll die.” No, no, no you won’t.Via  How To Stubbornly Refuse To Make Yourself Miserable About Anything-yes, Anything:What were you anxious or overconcerned about? Meeting new people? Doing well at work? Winning the approval of a person you liked? Passing a test or a course? Doing well at a job intervie w? Winning a game of tennis or chess? Getting into a good school? Learning that you have a serious disease? Being treated unfairly?  Look for your command or demand for success or approval that was creating your anxiety or overconcern. What was your should, ought, or must?Is disputing your irrational beliefs going  to immediately change everything? No.But when you start disputing you’ll see that your expectations aren’t in line with reality. And with a little work, those expectations will start to change.(For more happiness lifehacks you can learn from ancient philosophy, click here.)Sum upIt’s as simple as ABCD. Next time you’re turning red and clenching your fists, give this a shot:A is Adversity.  Like traffic. Sorry,  no genie can let you wish it away.B is Beliefs. Look for beliefs with these  troublesome words: should, ought and must. “Traffic shouldn’t be this bad.” Not rational. Traffic is what it is.  Sorry.C is Consequences. You  banging the steering wheel wit h your fist and sending your blood pressure into the stratosphere.D is Dispute.  Are you demanding  the universe and everyone bend to your wishes? Is that rational? No way. You can want, you can wish and you can definitely try your best in the future, but you cannot demand if you want to stay happy and sane.Life is not perfect. People aren’t perfect. You, dear reader, are not perfect. And that’s okay. But having beliefs that  any of these things “should” be the way you want causes you a lot of unnecessary suffering. Many of your irrational  beliefs are not immediately obvious. But you can definitely make progress. What did Epictetus, the great Stoic philosopher, say way back in the first century AD?People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them. What did Shakespeare write in Hamlet? There’s nothing either good or bad but th inking makes it so.How about the  Buddha? We are what we think.   All that we are arises with our thoughts. How to Do Work Late and Stay Sane - The Muse

How to Do Work Late and Stay Sane - The Muse How to Do Work Late and Stay Sane When you signed on to your job, you weren’t expecting to have to work after hours. In fact, you chose that specific industry or company because you wanted to go home every night without having to drag your to-do list home with you. But alas, sometimes you find yourself in a situation in which you just can’t fully unplug for the evening (or evenings). Maybe your boss is hounding you on an important project deadline, or you took on more responsibility and are still adjusting, or you know tomorrow you’re in back-to-back meetings and won’t have time to get everything done. It stinks- but I’m here to help make a night of work feel slightly more bearable. Go Home (if You Can) Can you get your work done from home? Great, pack up and leave the office. Just because you have a lot to do doesn’t mean you have to do it at the office. You’ll feel a lot better (and more motivated) if you get out of the place you’ve just spent 10 hours in and change up your scenery. Seriously, science says so. So go home, put on sweats, curl up on the couch (turn on some background music or TV if you can work that way), and finish it up without having to worry about keeping it professional. Get Comfortable See that line about sweats? Even if you have to stay in the office, make yourself comfortable (well, as much as you can without making others uncomfortable). Untie your tie, make a sweatshirt blanket, find a comfortable couch or better chair, and put yourself in ultimate work mode. Oh, and use this app so your computer’s not so blinding in the dark. Take a Break And if you can’t leave for whatever reason? Give yourself a much-deserved break before jumping in for work round two. At the very least, take a five-minute walk outside and get some fresh air. But if you can, grab a quick dinner away from your desk (and maybe a coffee or two). Eat Something …Speaking of dinner, you need to eat. No matter how much you have to do, take 15 minutes and figure out what you’re going to put in your mouth. Can you order dinner in? Go grab it? Are there cookies in the kitchen? Ideally, you’d sit down and have a healthy, protein-packed meal. However, you’re not living in an ideal world right now, so head to that vending machine (or that convenience store down the block, or that granola bar stash in your desk) and do the best you can. Though if you have options, these foods are the most energizing. Know Your Limits Even if you have to work an all-nighter, know yourself well enough to know when you’re no longer churning out good work. There’s no point in staying up until 3 AM if everything you do after 10 PM has to be re-done in the morning. If it’s better for you to wake up earlier and finish up then, do that instead. Start With the Most Urgent, Most Challenging Stuff Take advantage of the second wind you got from quick break by tackling the most urgent stuff first- that means the tasks that are due tomorrow or that your boss emphasized they need ASAP. Then, cover the more challenging stuff. You know, the stuff that takes the most brain power. You may not get to it all, but starting to lay the groundwork now will make it easier to finish later on (and if you know you won’t get it all finished in time, here’s how to break the news to your boss). Plan Before You Get Started There’s nothing worse than planning an all-nighter and then realizing you can’t get started without Jon’s numbers report. And Jon doesn’t check his email after he leaves the office. Make a list of everything you need from other people and ask for it before you get going (and before they leave for the night). Worried they won’t take you seriously? Read this. Set Yourself Up for the Next Day If you’re on an adrenaline high when you wrap up, spend 10 minutes getting ready for tomorrow- because you’re probably going to be exhausted when you wake up. You can make a list of everything you should double-check before sending it in, or pack your work bag, or lay out your outfit, or whip together a quick lunch or snack to grab before you leave in the morning. Reward Yourself Finally, recognize how awesome you are for getting stuff done by unwinding with a good book, digging into ice cream, playing your favorite video game, taking a nice, long bath, or, if your eyes are closing, going to sleep. Working late isn’t easy or fun, but unfortunately, it’s sometimes a part of your job. While it may happen, you shouldn’t forget about self-care- for your sanity’s sake, and for the sake of showing up to work your best (or, best you can be) self. Hopefully, working after hours is a rare occurrence for you- and when it is, you’ll know how to handle it confidently and efficiently. However, if you find your once 9-to-5 job’s turning into an all-day, every-day affair, here’s how to keep your sanity when working insane hours. You’ve got this!

8 Phrases That Are Killing Your Cover Letters

8 Phrases That Are Killing Your Cover Letters 8 Phrases That Are Killing Your Cover Letters Few people like writing cover letters. As a result, they tend to fall back on cliches and fluff that doesn't strengthen their applications, but in many cases, weakens them. See how many of these eight phrases you recognize from your own cover letters â€" and if you spot any, nix them immediately! 1. "Dear Sirs." If you're still opening business letters with this salutation, assume you're offending and turning off at least half your recipients. It's 2015 â€" you shouldn't be discounting the idea that a woman is making hiring decisions. (And if you still think that "sirs" is the generic plural for both men and women, it's time to rethink that.) Frankly, even "dear sir or madam" is outdated enough at this point that it comes across as stuffy. It's fine to simply go with "dear hiring manager" if you don't know the hiring manager's name. 2. "I'm writing to apply for the analyst position you have open." What's wrong with this? Nothing â€" unless you forgot to replace the position title from some other application you sent off. A startling number of job applicants send cover letters addressed to the wrong person, naming the wrong company or expressing interest in a position that doesn't even exist at the place they're applying, because they forget to customize the details of the letter for the job they're applying for. 3. "I'm uniquely qualified to do this job." For some reason, this phrase has become popular with job seekers, and it's a weird one. The thing is, unless you're intimately familiar with all the other applicants for the job, you have no way of knowing whether you're uniquely qualified or the best qualified. (And in my experience, the people who use this line rarely have unusual qualifications.) 4. "I work well independently and as part of a team." This is another phrase that's become oddly popular in cover letters. But making this assertion is like announcing that you show up on time and shower regularly; it's expected, not something you need to specially call out and brag about. If working in groups or independently is particularly important for the job you're applying for, you can illustrate that by providing concrete examples of times you've excelled at doing that â€" but simply proclaiming the ability doesn't strengthen your letter and ends up watering it down. Speaking of simply proclaiming things … 5. "I'm a hard-working, detail-oriented, proactive self-starter with great communication skills." First, these are all cliched buzzwords. But perhaps even more importantly, it gets you exactly nowhere to simply proclaim that you are these things. If you want to convince a hiring manager that you're detail-oriented or take initiative, the way to do that is by talking about accomplishments that use those skills and demonstrate those traits. Don't just announce that you are _________; show it, by describing what you've achieved that illustrates it. 6. "I don't believe a cover letter and  résumé  can really tell you what I have to offer, so I hope to meet in person."  Employers generally do believe a cover letter and  résumé  can tell them what they need to know  at this stage in order to decide whether it's worth talking further. Deriding the process they've chosen to use isn't likely to endear you to them. 7. "I'm seeking a salary of $X." Unless you're specifically instructed to include your salary expectations in your cover letter, no mention of salary belongs there. Some candidates announce their salary requirements in their cover letters without anyone ever asking, and they often end up wildly underpricing themselves compared to what the employer is planning to pay. There's no reason to undercut yourself (or potentially guess too high) when no one has even asked you to name a number. 8. "I'll call your office next week to schedule an interview." This is overly pushy and aggressive and will turn off many hiring managers. You've already done your part â€" you've expressed interest by applying for the job. Now it's in the employer's court to review your application along with the others they've received and decide if they're interested in talking further.
